This mojito is a super quick and an easy way to impress your friends with your cocktail-making skills. Inspired by the traditional mojito, this recipe adds an extra pop of flavor and color by adding blackberries into the mix.

 

Although we’re often told to avoid fruit when eating low carb, blackberries are actually some of the lowest-carb fruits. They also contain a lot of dietary fiber which helps counteract the natural sugars.

 

Also, in this cocktail, a few blackberries go a long way towards adding that pop of tangy and sweet flavor that makes this cocktail shine. It’s hard to believe that this recipe is actually low carb!

 

This keto mojito recipe couldn’t be simpler. It really takes no more than two minutes to throw together a mojito once you have all the ingredients ready. This simplicity of this recipe make it the perfect go-to recipe for any occasion. If you want to go for a more traditional mojito, you can even just omit the blackberries. 

 

While mojitos traditionally contains alcohol, it absolutely doesn’t have to. We have made this recipe many times as a virgin cocktail by omitting the rum. This still makes a delicious juice that can be enjoyed at any time of day. I

 

‘ve found that the virgin version of this mojito works perfectly as a soda replacement. It really fulfills those cravings for a sweet carbonated drink. It’s also just a really great way to spoil yourself with something a little special.

 

The inspiration for our Low-Carb Blackberry Mojito

The recipe was actually inspired by the huge availability of mint in our garden.

 

A few weeks ago, we started growing mint in our garden. Something that you have to know about mint is that it grows fast–faster than almost any other plant we’ve grown before. Since then, our mint has exploded and we have more mint than we know what to do with.

 

So, we’ve been trying to come up with new ways to take advantage of all this wonderful fresh mint at our disposal. Also our current quarantine reality makes the perfect opportunity to experiment with making low carb cocktails.

 

This recipe was based off of this recipe for a mojito from allrecipes.We then altered the recipe to make it low-carb and also added a little twist by adding crushed blackberries.

What is a mojito?

A mojito is a traditional cuban cocktail. It normally consists of lime juice, white rum, mint, sugar/sweetener, and club soda. This combination of refreshing flavors makes this cocktail a popular as a summertime drink of choice. Our recipe is a variation of the traditional version.

 

How many carbs are in a mojito?

A typical mojito that you’d find at a bar can be pretty high in carbs because they use a simple syrup to add sweetness to the cocktail. While you might have to avoid this drink at a bar or restaurant, making a low-carb version at home is so simple and foolproof!

 

This recipe replaces the simple syrup with a low carb sweetener which provides all the flavor and sweetness with a lot less carbs. A traditional mojito might have around 29 grams of carbs. In comparison, this recipe only has 3 net carbs per serving.

 

Is rum gluten-free?

Yes! As long as the rum does not have any added flavors, it is gluten-free. Unlike many liquors which are made from grains such as wheat or barley, distilled rum is made from molasses and sugarcane. Both of these ingredients are widely considered to be gluten-free.

 

This distinction makes rum a popular liquor of choice for those following a gluten-free lifestyle. Be sure to proceed with more caution with flavored or spiced rums. If there are additional flavorings added, you may want to do a little more research to confirm that it is still gluten-free.

How to make a low-carb blackberry mojito

Making this blackberry mojito is surprisingly simple. The most important part of this recipe in the muddling of all the ingredients. This process helps release the juice and flavor of each ingredient and makes this cocktail shine.

 

What is muddling?

Muddling is essentially the pressing of herbs or fruit when making a cocktail in order to extract the oils or juices from the ingredients. So a muddler is essentially a longer pestle that is used for making cocktails.

 

If you don’t have a muddler, don’t worry! You can substitute a muddler with any tool that is long enough to reach the bottom of the glass and also has a wide enough base to press the herbs and fruit. My personal go-to substitute is a long wooden spoon. 

 

In this recipe, we muddle the ingredients twice. The first time, ensures that the mint is throughly pressed and the oils are extracted before adding all the other ingredients to the glass.

 

Once all the ingredients are muddled, add ice cubes until in nearly reaches the rim of the glass. Next, pour the rum over the ice. Finally, fill up the remaining space in the cup with club soda or sparkling water. 

 

Before serving, be sure to give the drink a good stir. This ensures that the flavors, sweetness, and rum are evenly distributed throughout the drink. Next, serve and enjoy!

What type of mint is used in a mojito?

The best type of mint for a mojito is a widely contested issue. Each person has their own preference so there really is not simple answer. Also, there is an absurd number of mint varieties from sweet mint and chocolate mint to peppermint and spearmint and many more.

 

Generally speaking, the most widely accepted type of mint for a mojito is Spearmint. While another variety of mint (Mojito Mint or Yerba Buena) is used in Cuba, many argue that spearmint is the most comparable variety widely available in the US.

 

Sweet mint is often viewed as giving too soft of a flavor for a mojito, but if you are looking for a more delicate taste, this could be a good option for you. Peppermint contains a lot of menthol which can make it taste more cooling and similar to toothpaste. So, it isn’t the ideal option for a mojito.

 

Of course, don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of mint to discover your personal preference!

Ingredients

  • 8-10 fresh spearmint leaves depending on the size
  • 4 fresh blackberries medium
  • 1/2 lime cut into four slices
  • 1 tbsp stevia erythritol blend sweetener
  • 2 oz white rum
  • club soda

Instructions

  1. In a medium sturdy glass cup, muddle the peppermint leaves, two slices of lime, and two blackberries together.
