The recipe

With this recipe, you can enjoy good nutrition in the morning, even if you’re pressed for time. And when I said enjoy, I meant it.

A dollop of cream cheese and some heavy whipping cream makes this smoothie rich, creamy, and satisfying. I made this smoothie with almond milk rather than cows milk to keep the carb level low. If you have allergies to almonds or nuts, or prefer a different type milk, feel free to substitute.

While this recipe includes the ingredient, collagen, you can make this smoothie successfully without it.  It just won’t give you that boost of protein and the benefits of collagen.

If you prefer, you can add an unflavored or vanilla flavored protein powder of choice instead of the collagen. This will change the flavor of the smoothie somewhat. If you use a vanilla protein powder, you should skip the vanilla extract.

The inspiration

I’m not a big egg eater in the morning, so one of my favorite ways to start the day is with a smoothie. I love throwing things in the blender, pressing the button, and making glorious treats for breakfast.

I modeled this particular smoothie after blueberry cheesecake. You know the one–that classic cheesecake with a slight lemon note and a drizzle of blueberry syrup on top. That’s the flavor combination I was going for, only I wanted something quick and easy.

To create the actual recipe, I altered my recipe for  a Low-Carb Strawberry Smoothie. I made a few changes to capture that blueberry cheesecake flavor, and I also added some collagen to add a bit of protein.

What is collagen?

The protein, collagen, provides structure for our bodies. It holds our bones together, gives structure to our skin, and helps cushion our joints.

It gives strength to our tendons and ligaments. This important protein also helps keep our teeth strong. It’s important for nail and hair health.

Collagen is found in many other parts of our body such as organs and blood vessels. With all of the ways our body uses this protein, it is no surprise that it is the most abundant protein in the body.

Benefits of collagen peptides

If you don’t eat animal connective tissues, bones, and bone broth, it can be difficult to get collagen in your diet. In this case, you may choose to supplement your collagen intake.

Collagen that has been broken into tiny pieces, called peptides, is available as a supplement. These smaller pieces are more absorbable and also dissolve easier in drinks and other foods.

Collagen peptides may help improve the skin. One study looked at the anti-aging effects of collagen and found that it improved skin elasticity, texture, and moisture.

This is good news for those of us who are aging, but trying to maintain a youthful appearance. Because it improves skin elasticity, it may help tighten the skin of those who have recently had a baby or lost a lot of weight.

Collagen also has been shown to improve nail growth and improve nail elasticity (1).

While collagen helps improve your looks on the outside, it isn’t just a vanity supplement. It has been shown to improve joint health (2) and  improve bone strength (3).

This is not a comprehensive list of collagen benefits. Due to the importance of this protein in the body, taking it as a supplement may have far-reaching effects.

If you choose to use a collagen peptide supplement, be sure to pick a good brand. I particularly like the collagen peptides from Perfect Supplements. It comes from organic grass-fed cows, is pesticide and hormone free, and easily absorbed by the body. It’s tasteless and odorless which makes it completely undetectable in this smoothie.
